So, sit back, relax, and let's dive into the world of Resident Evil together!
Initial Impressions: This is Africa?
Alright, so I booted up the game, and the first thing that hit me was the setting. We're in Africa! I wasn't expecting that. The visuals are surprisingly good for a game from 2009, and the atmosphere is definitely unsettling. I'm immediately thrown into a bustling village, but something feels off. People are acting strange, and there's a definite sense of unease in the air. It's really hot so that is probably contributing to the unease. I've heard people say good things about this game, and also I have heard the game is problematic in how it portrays the setting. Either way, I will try to go in with an open mind! The way the sun beats down on the environment and the way the characters sweat really gets across the sense of place. This game may be from 2009 but it still looks great!
First Encounters: Zombies... or Something Else?
It didn't take long for things to go south. The villagers suddenly turned hostile, and it was clear that these weren't your average zombies. They're faster, more aggressive, and they seem to be wielding weapons! I was scrambling to figure out the controls, trying to aim my gun while being swarmed by these crazed villagers. Let me tell you, panic set in real fast. I was running around like a headless chicken! Luckily, I had Sheva, my AI partner, who seemed to know what she was doing. She was picking off enemies left and right while I was just trying to survive. Teamwork makes the dream work, right? Sheva, in this early stage, is carrying me. Hopefully I can quickly adapt and start to become a more useful partner!
The Controls: A Necessary Evil
Okay, let's talk about the controls. They're... clunky. I'm not going to lie. Coming from modern games, it takes some getting used to the tank controls and the limited movement. I found myself getting stuck on corners, struggling to aim, and generally feeling like I was fighting the game more than the zombies. But hey, that's part of the charm, right? Once I got used to it, the controls became second nature. So it's important to adapt and not let the game beat you. You must beat the game! I have seen many gamers not like this style of control. But Resident Evil has long been known for this style of play. Many older fans love the style, while new fans expect a more modern approach.
Inventory Management: Tetris of Terror
Another thing that took some getting used to was the inventory system. It's like playing Tetris with your weapons and items! You have a limited number of slots, and you have to carefully arrange everything to make sure you have what you need. Do I bring that extra first aid spray, or do I take more ammo? These are the tough choices you have to make in a zombie apocalypse, guys. It's a system that definitely adds to the tension and forces you to prioritize. This is a really unique part of the game, something modern games don't really explore or go into detail with. It can really add to the level of immersion the game provides.
Puzzles and Head-Scratchers: My Brain Hurts
I'm not going to spoil any specific puzzles, but let me just say that Resident Evil 5 has its fair share of head-scratchers. I spent a good chunk of time wandering around, trying to figure out what to do next. I even had to resort to looking up a walkthrough once or twice (don't judge me!). But hey, that's all part of the fun, right? There's nothing more satisfying than finally cracking a tough puzzle and feeling like a genius. I really do think that difficult puzzles can add to the immersion. It really encourages you to explore the map and take in the level design. Then, once you actually figure out the puzzle, you can feel great about yourself!
Jump Scares and Heart Attacks: I'm Not Okay
Let's be real, Resident Evil is known for its jump scares, and Resident Evil 5 doesn't disappoint. There were several moments where I literally jumped out of my seat and screamed like a little girl. Those Lickers are terrifying! And don't even get me started on the Majini popping out of nowhere. My heart can't take much more of this! When playing horror games it is important to be aware of your surroundings, and be prepared for the inevitable jump scare. This can really help reduce the intensity of the scares and make the game a little more manageable. Even though I have been jump scared many times playing horror games, I still fall for it!
Sheva: My MVP
I have to give a shoutout to Sheva, my AI partner. She's been an absolute lifesaver throughout this playthrough. She's always got my back, providing cover fire, healing me when I'm low on health, and generally being a badass. I don't know what I would do without her. Sheva is carrying me this entire playthrough so far. Her AI is on point, and she is able to clear enemies with ease. I am hoping that eventually I will be able to catch up to her and become a useful partner. The AI partner mechanic is something really unique that Resident Evil 5 provides.
Final Thoughts (So Far)
Overall, my blind playthrough of Resident Evil 5 has been an absolute blast. It's been challenging, terrifying, and hilarious all at the same time. I've died countless times, screamed my lungs out, and maybe even shed a tear or two. But I've also had a ton of fun exploring this game for the first time. If you've never played Resident Evil 5, I highly recommend giving it a try. And if you're feeling brave, try going in blind like I did! You might just surprise yourself. I really think that Resident Evil 5 is a great game, and I am excited to experience more of the game. So please tune in to find out if I complete it! I really do think that the experience of playing a game blind is a really fun one. It is a great way to play a game and really submerge yourself in the world the developers created. Thanks for joining me on this adventure! And I'll see you in the next one!
